I was with the SVC 3/133rd FA (El Paso) when the 56th BCT went to Iraq. We were detached from the rest of the Brigade and sent to Tikrit and worked with HQ 42nd ID NYARNG at Forward Operating Base Danger. We were at the tip of the Triangle and at one of Sadam's palace complex's. We provided security to the FOB, Objective Midland, FOB Speicher for a while, and convoy esocurts. We lost one Vehicle to a mine, came close on a few IED's, and was on the reciving end of a lot of inaccurate Insurgent motor/rocket attacks. All in all we all came home. We escourted over 800 convoys without asingle loss of life (folks from other units wanted to ride with us because we brought everyone home). Had a steller Supply & Maintenance record, no succesful attacks on the FOB. We also recived a few power boats and patrolled the Tigris river, deliver some 50,000 school supplies to the local Iraqi schools. Our Catholic Chaplain flew all over the country and had logged almost as much flight as the pilots. When we were leaving there was a Signal Unit that was moving into Speicher from the 36th, we also saw some folks from a Maintenace unit in Iraq who eventuly ended up working down in Kuwait (good hard working group of mechanics). I know some of the 36th folks went to Afghanistan about half way thorugh our tour. The 56th is heading back over sometime 08/09 for their second tour in the sand box. The funny thing is we ended up being attached to the 101 and 3rd ID for a while after the 42nd went home. I don't know how the 3rd ID was back during your fight, but they could be hard to get along with some times. Hell they didn't get along with themselves. Units from Benning would wearone color of name tag and units from the other base would wear the other color (we were all wearing DCU's, so the 3rd ID looked childish with the whole were better than they are thing).
