This difficult to answer. It depends on where, when, what branch of the service and what type of unit in the war you are talking about. AM radios (BC-611's, BC-654 and BC-1306) were used throughout the war. All of these radios had phone/voice transmission. The BC-654 & BC-1306 had CW capablity for long range comunication. If you had to comunicate with aircraft or naval vessels, AM is what you used. FM was used early by only the Armored and Artillery units via vehicle-mounted radios, none of their equipment was portable. The only portable FM radio (BC-1000, phone/voice only) came into play late 1943 for Infantry use. Most of these Armored, Artillery and Infantry radios could not talk to each other because they were on different frequency bands.

I plan on going to Lost Battalion Symposium on July 19. Lt. Erwin Blonder will be there as a guest speaker. He was the forward artillery observer with the 141^st. His radio was the battalion's sole contact with the rest of the division. I will find out what kind of radio he had and whom he was able to contact. I am interested in this information too. Because his radio ran on batteries, it had to be either the SCR536/BC611 or the SCR300/BC1000. If he had the SCR300, he would not have had direct contact with aircraft because they did not operate FM radio in that frequency range, they ran the much lower frequency AM radios. The Germans had access to both types of radio, will have to inquire if they jammed communications at the symposium.

The EE8 fieldphones could communicate further than the 10-20 miles that the bigger radios could. They would work in terrain and weather that radios would not work. The EE8 batteries tended to last much longer than radio battieries. They were used four different ways.

They would be used point to point, between two fieldphones or in what is called a hot loop between several fieldphones wired together so the front line positions could be connected together. In the fieldphone manual, it describes how to take the fieldphone apart and remove the bell so only the clanger will rattle or to disconnect the bell and rely on the sound from the handset earpiece to hear when the fieldphone was ringing. Some GI's would rest their hand on the two wire terminals to get shocked when the fieldphone was getting a call.

Forward Observation Posts (OP) would have a line ran back to a switchboard at the closest Command Post (CP), usually the Company CP. The call would the get routed to the necessary place (command, artillery, etc.).

Forward CP's would have a line ran back to the rear CP's because radio was not able to reach past 10-20 miles. The forward CP would become the rear CP as the troops advanced. Rarely did they pickup and reuse wire that had been laid.

Finally, each unit (squad, platoon, etc.) would be issued a fieldphone and a roll of wire to string a line to the CP from their bivwack area.
