My uncle George Sakulich from Scranton, Pennsylvania, was in the 36th Division from 15MAY1942 through 26OCT1945. Unfortunately I have no information on where
he served or the battles in which he may have been involved. I would like any information that would help fill in the blanks since his service records were
destroyed in the St Louis fire. The information I have so far is that he spent the last year as an MP in the regiment. He stayed single after the war and died
in 1989 without saying much beyond having "walked up Italy"

Hi,
I found your uncle's name on P.94 of the 36th division roster in Service Co. of the 143rd Inf Regiment. Pfc, 776 Norman, Bridgeport Conn. (That was the only George Sakulich I saw listed in the roster.) Do you know if he or his parents lived in Bridgeport at one time? I can offer this information on Service Companies in Infantry Regiments during world war 2: Each Regiment had a Service Company. They were used to transport
infantrymen from one sector of the front to another in 4 wheel drive trucks. They had a lot of truck drivers and mechanics. They may have had other functions
also.
Battle risk: Though they were not on the front line, they had the risk of enemy artillery. Shortly after the 36th Div. landed in Southern France, our truck which pulled a 57MM anti-tank gun, suddenly stalled in an open field. After a few minutes, an enemy 88MM projectile landed about 60 yards to our front and exploded. A few minutes later, one landed halfway between out stalled truck and the first projectile. The older guys ran for protection to a nearby farm house and us "greenies" followed. Sure enough, the next shot hit and destroyed our truck. About 80% of the infantry's casualties were caused by enemy artillery and mortars so being behind the front lines didn't guaranty safety. JayD. Baxter |
