This evening, April 30, the Documentary Channel had John Huston(who is he?) showing films taken in Italy. The 143rd Infantry Regt. was mentioned many times in
the taking of San Pietro. Also excellent pictures of the Italian civilians and men of the 143rd. The 143rd Regt. took in 1100 replacements after the town was
taken. Many of the pictures in the Pictorial History were in this documentary. Italian women carrying boxes, barrels, etc. on their heads was interesting. One
even carried a casket on her head. If this documentary comes on again, you won't want to miss it. Jay D. Baxter PS: I notice in the Pictorial History that
John Huston was a photographer with the 36th Div. and after San Pietro, he was promoted to Major. But the infantrymen who actually took ground at great cost of
life and limb and won the war were mostly Privates and Private First Class with a few Sergeants. I guess skill with a movie camera is more important than skill
in combat.
