This may turn into a long list, but I have tried to put all the information that has been posted on the website pertaining to books about the 36th Division, or history books that others have read and recommend. Some of the posts are old, so price or availability may not be accurate, but at least it's a start.

Brager The Texas 36th Division: A History Austin: Eakin Press 2002 Available: Eakin Press PO Box 90159 Austin, TX 78709 1-800-880-8642 www.eakinpress.com Also available through Amazon.com. The book covers the history of the Division and its ancestors from the formation of the component Texas Volunteer Guard units during the 1870s to the end of the Divisions active combat history in 1945. A pre-script sets the scene with the Texas military tradition, and the general militia tradition, both of which the 36th joined and live up to with honor and ability. A post-script takes the story to a few years ago, when the book was written. My intention was to tell a good story. But I also tried to show that military history is more than just exploits, more than just politics by other means. The story of the 36th Division shows that military history is a matter of soldiers struggling under extreme pressure to meet extreme challenges. Two chapters from the book were adapted for a journal article. Rapido and Velletri: Problem Solving in World War II, Military History of the West, Volume 31, Fall 2001, Number 2, pages 93-116. This was the cover story in that issue. Bruce Brager Nephew of Bruce Kouser, killed in action with the 36th Division, 142nd Regiment, October 1944. |

I found this to be one of the best WW 2 books out there. What these men accomplished and the colorful soldiers involved was amazing. Gen. Fredrick was a one of a kind leader. He was hands on and fully involved with his soldiers on each mission. These men were trained in both parachutes and skis. Prior to on Fredrick's first jump he just picked up a parachute and said "let's go it doesn't look that difficult" ! Without one lesson. He speaks highly of the 36th and the battles in Italy are well detailed. I f I remember correctly, he was Commander of the 36th for a short time. Excellent reading about some underrated soldiers. |

Jack Wilson, veteran of 141st D, Lost Batallion, wrote his history in his book:
Living on the Edge Forward from his book is as follows: Over the years, my friends and relatives have asked me to write a book of my experiences and memories of World War II. I've named this book LIVING ON THE EDGE to help the reader understand that in the heat of battle, we were living on the edge, and knew very well that it could be our last. Having lived through seven close calls, I knew that someone had to be looking over me, for it could not be that I am that lucky. You can contact Jack Wilson at: jjwilson@psci.net |

Paolo from Velletri
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'd like to share some recent events that have brought Paolo, from Velletri, even closer to our 36th Division "family". If you have read my topic about our trip to Italy this September, you know that Paolo and his re enactment group met us in Paestum, and it was an incredible day. To have our veterans, and ourselves, see these Italian men in their 36th Division Uniforms, jeeps, etc........and let us ride around Paestum, on the beach in their jeeps, where the 36th landed, it's hard to describe the emotions. It truly was one of the highlights of our trip. I am just thrilled to say that Paolo has been to the states on "holiday", and spent time with several people from our trip in September. Two of the people from our trip met Paolo and Susanna when they landed here, and helped get them settled to a hotel, dinner that evening, etc. They also met with them this weekend on their departure back to Italy, after 2 weeks of traveling, again, dinner and helping them with any needs. I feel absolutely blessed that Paolo and Susanna stayed with my family for a few days.......we really had a wonderful time, learning so much about our different lives, and yet such a common bond from WW2. I really wanted his trip to be special, and one of the most important things he wanted to see was the 36th Division Museum at Camp Mabry. I planned a few surprises for him....... I had the entire day planned for Camp Mabry.....Al Dietrich, veteran from 141st B, and his wife went to Austin with us. There we met one of the men on our trip to Italy, Joe, who drove from Houston to see Paolo again. I had also arranged for Matthew Netthercut, the Texas Based re enactor to meet us at the museum. It was an amazing day..........Al Dietrich gave us a personal tour of the museum, and of course we listened to many a war story........both Al Dietrich and Matthew had their 36th uniforms on.......very impressive! The day was really special, and we all had such a great time. Matthew and Paolo really became such friends, and so much to talk about........the re enactment of the 36th. We all sent Paolo and Susanna back to Italy with gifts, to include "Cruel was the Way" book, signed by Al Dietrich, cd with over 100 pictures of his re enactment group taken while we were in Italy, beautiful shirts with monogramed 36th logo (designed and done by Matthew), American flag, T patcher cap, and of course Spurs hat.....and vanilla flavor non dairy creamer for Susanna! I think it is such an incredible history and connection that we all have, with what occured with our veterans so many years ago. What our fathers fought for was not forgotten, and has made our world a better place. I know my Dad would have loved to meet Paolo, and see that the battles he fought were not forgotten. It is reflected in the eyes of men like Paolo, who are devoted to recording our father's presence in Italy. Paolo will meet us again next September in Italy..... pstickle daughter of t patcher William G. Paolo has a long time researching information about the Velletri area battles and the 36th Division, and he has now published a book! I received it in the mail this week, and it is just beautiful. 160 pages, hardback book, full of pictures and history. He has done a wonderful job, and the T Patch is right on the front cover. The title of the book: 23 maggio-2 guigno 1944 La battagglia di Velletri Storia dello scontro che apri la porta per Roma alla Quinta Armata americana, per merito della 36a divisione di fanteria, "Texas" by Paolo Carotenuto In his acknowledgements and gratitude at the front of the book, I see many names from this forum who have so graciously helped him, plus of course, veterans whom he has corresponded with.......a great project in helping this young Italian preserve the history of our fathers war. Congratulations Paolo! pstickle pstickle Moderator (8/7/04 6:36 pm) Reply | Edit | Del Paolo's book -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Anyone that would like a copy of Paolo's book, I would be more than happy to bring it home from Italy. The postage is expensive, and I can save you that expense. The price of the book is 20 euros, which is, at this day, $25. It is a beautiful book, plenty of pictures, captions in both Italian and English. It's incredible that this young Italian 36th re enactor has been able to write and have this book published. I know he would appreciate any interest and purchase of his book. pstickle daughter of t patcher William G. "Gregg" Wiley, 141st I djspgs@milx.net |

Moderator (1/31/04 12:34 pm) Reply | Edit | Del All NEW BOOK ON 36TH: The Ordinary Infantryman -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Ordinary Infantryman: Heros Then, Heros Again by Imogene Woods and Twelve WW2 Infantrymen 360 pages, hardback, with photos from the '40's. Published September, 2003, to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the battle at Salerno. When I began a search for information about my father who was killed in WWII, I had no idea how my life would change. Using the men's eyes and memories, I would become involved in the war, seeing their sights, feeling the cold, the wet, the pain, and the fear when on the front line. With them, I would travel to other countries and see not only the terrain but feel its hard effects when digging a foxhole or sleeping on the rocky ground and seeing death, again and again. Their memories spanned the war from Salerno to Rome, to the Invasion of Southern France and on to Berlin--the entire war for the 36th. I would gain friendship with these twelve special veterans, formerly infantrymen from the 36th, who assisted me by telling me their stories. This book evolved from them sharing these experiences and my feeling that their stories needed to be published. Glimpses of my fallen father depicted any average GI who didn't return. By looking at the twelve special veterans I had dealt with, I could see how my dad would probably have been had he returned--a hero then, a hero again. Imogene Woods Published by: Imogene Woods 1167 West Shawnee Springfield, MO 65810 Order from the publisher, above, $23 including postage and mailing. For more information or comments: imgn37wds@hotmail.com I am more than happy to post this for Imogene. I simply ran across this while changing channels on my TV......what a treasure I found! The interview and show consisted of live phone calls with military history questions......I couldn't believe his in depth knowledge about WW2. It was facinating. The interview included all aspects about WW2, and one caller was the brother of a T patcher inquiring about his service in North Africa. Mr. D'Este went on to talk about the 36th Division, and how the battles they fought were so brutal and in such close contact. He described the horrible weather and terrain the 36th endured. Mr. D'Este can also answer questions by email until tomorrow via CSpan website (7-8-03). booktv@c-span.org I would like to post a list of books written by Mr. D'Este available also for purchase on the website. He has written 6 books on military campaigns and biographies. "Decision in Normandy" "Bitter for Victory; The Battle for Sicily, 1943" "World War II in the Mediterranean- 1942-1945" "Fatal Decision: Anzio and the Battle for Rome" "Patton: A Genius for War" "Eisenhower: A Soldiers Life" Publisher: Owl Books 115 West 18th St. New York, NY 10011 |

This is a book recommended by Lt. Carl Strom, 141st B.
I'm posting his comments........ By the same token, if you are collecting books about the Italian Campaign and specifically about the 36th's actions you must get a copy of Matt Parker's recent "Monte Cassino". It is the best telling of that battle I have read to date. No other author I have read, and I collect all of them I can find, tells the whole story. It is published by Doubleday and available at about $28.00. Try your local book stores. pstickle |

Hello,
I am writing a book called "My Mother Kept a Scrapbook: the True Story of a WWII POW" about Pvt. Gerhard A. Johnson, formerly of Eland, WI. He was in Company A and was captured in Italy on 1-21-44 and imprisoned at Stalag IIB in Hammerstein until March 1945. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who knew Gerhard or served with him. Thank you in advance for any help you may give me. Kathleen Marie Marsh 16965 Nicolet Road Townsend, WI 54175 715-276-6515 |

Thanks to all of you who recommended books about the 36th. I have read an unbelievable amount and still have a stack of reading to do this summer!
I am happy to say I have finished my book about Gerhard Johnson, a WWII POW who was a member of the 36th. It is called "My Mother Kept a Scrapbook: the True Story of a WWII POW" and will be out in mid-April. This is NOT a history book per se, but a book about an ordinary man caught up in an extraordinary historical event. See www.otterrunbooks.com for more details! I am having a reception for Gerhard at the VFW Hall in Wausau, WI on April 16, 2005 from 1-3:00 P.M. I have arranged to pick him up in a limousine that day (he's 80 and never ridden in a limo!) and have hired a bagpiper to do a medley of patriotic hymns and a young bugler to play Taps in honor of all who served and especially those who have paid the ultimate price. Several politicians and many veterans from the area are planning to attend. The public is invited and I would love to see you there!! Kathie Marsh kathiemarsh@yahoo.com 1-715-276-6515 |
