On this 2007 anniversary of the end of the siege of the Alamo in 1836, a Houston Chronicle article entitled The Alamo May Need a Costly Tuneup describes how the largely limestone shrine of Texas liberty in San Antonio is aging and needs repairs.
According to the article, "the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, who have safeguarded the shrine since 1902, are preparing the Alamo's first master plan for upgrades since 1979. DRT officials said they can mitigate the destructive forces of nature and man if they can raise large sums for preservation. They also want to enhance visitors' experience at the hallowed site.
First round upgrades are expected to begin at about one million dollars. Over 2.5 million visit the shrine annually.
