Adina De Zavala was the granddaughter of Lorenzo de Zavala, the first Vice President of Texas and was one of the states premier preservationists. She is considered by many to be the patron saint of historic preservation in San Antonio.
In 2005, the Friends of Adina De Zavala were formed in an attempt to keep this great womans memory alive and to further add respect and honor to her and her familys rich legacy in Texas and they are inviting the public to honor her again on her birthday this year on TUESDAY, NOV. 28, 2006. Everyone is invited to the Spanish Governors Palace (105 Plaza de Armas, 210-224-0601) from 5:00-7:00pm, for a special ceremony in her honor sponsored by the Friends and Texas Tejano.com.
Adina was a true heroine to the San Antonio community, says Rudi Rodriguez of the Friends of Adina De Zavala. Her efforts helped preserve our Tejano and Texan heritage. She was descended from one of the legendary Tejano families in Texas and was a true pioneer.
Food and refreshments will be served beginning at 5:00pm and guest speakers will begin at 6:00pm. They will discuss the life and legacy of Adina De Zavala, as well as the importance of the Spanish Governors Palace as an historic landmark in Texas. Photos and tours of the historic Palace will be made available
"We are honored to keep Adina De Zavala's name and memory alive. She was the "first lady of preservation in San Antonio, if not Texas, says Maclovio Perez of the Friends of Adina De Zavala. Adina did more than fight to save the Alamo, she advocated for many of our historical buildings that we now take for granted. Were it not for her, the Alamo wouldn't be what it is and the Spanish Governor's Palace might have been demolished. She dedicated her entire life to preserving our past. The least we can do is gather once a year and celebrate her life and contributions. She was half Mexican and half Irish, making her a formidable little lady."
Texas Tejano.com is proud to honor this legendary matriarch of Texas history. It is part of our mission to ensure that the legacies of Tejanos and Tejanas are not forgotten. In 2007, we will be honoring other Tejanos and Tejanas who contributed to the growth and development of Texas with a series of ambitious projects that we will be alerting everyone to in the near future. These events include the 3rd Annual Tejano Vigil at the Alamo, a Tejano Symposium, the 3rd Annual De Zavala Birthday Celebration and more. If you would like to be a part of these or any other of our future, please contact Rudi R. Rodriguez at (210) 673-3584.
